SIXTY-THREE
FORGOTTEN HUMAN SKILLS
As more tasks become automated, we risk losing even more skills. With self-driving cars on the horizon, it won’t be many generations until humans don’t even know how to drive a car; just watch. This shift toward automation has consequences for our society, as we become more disconnected from the skills and knowledge that were once essential to our everyday lives. For example, before the invention of the printing press, people had to memorize and verbally recite books. Yes, humans used to be able to recite entire books. Why? Well, because they had to. This incredible feat of memory demonstrates the remarkable capabilities of the human mind. Similarly, there are people in Mexico who can run “long-distance running – up to 200 miles (320 km) in one session over periods of several days through their homeland of rough canyon country.” - SAM HEWARD, Ultra X
How? Because they never stopped doing it. It isn't some superhuman talent – it was a natural human skill that disappeared when humans stopped practicing it. These remarkable skills have diminished over time, and many, many more are about to diminish as we, as a society, lean on technology to do practically everything for us.
