SIXTY-TWO
LAW OF USE
THE DECLINE IN KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC SKILLS IN THE DIGITAL AGE
Learned helplessness is on the rise! When someone does something for you, you have no need to do it yourself, and thus, you don’t. Suddenly, skills begin to disappear.
Why don’t we know how to do anything anymore?
Forgotten human skills? How does one forget their skills?
"Use it or lose it" is more relevant now than ever. Learned uselessness refers to a state where individuals possess knowledge or skills that are no longer relevant or valuable in their current context or environment. It occurs when acquired information or abilities become obsolete or have little practical application in daily lives or work.
In the digital age, the ease of accessing information through various technological tools has led to a shift in how we acquire and process knowledge. With an abundance of readily available information, individuals may rely on external sources rather than actively seeking to possess and internalize the information themselves. This reliance on access to information rather than deep understanding can make individuals vulnerable to being replaced or deemed irrelevant in certain contexts.
Today, we increasingly rely on digital tools such as smartphones, calculators, and search engines like Google to perform everyday tasks. While these technologies make our lives easier, they can also lead to a decline in basic skills, such as math and counting money. We have become increasingly reliant on devices and automation to perform tasks for us. In turn, we are losing our skills due to the universal rule: use it or lose it.
