What Is Cancel Culture? 

“Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming.” – Dictionary.com 

What does it mean to cancel someone?

Note: it is “someone” who is canceled, not “something.” This is an important distinction as we move forward with looking at cancel culture. The media will not attack an idea or a theme – a concept – as that means it would need to examine where that idea came from – where and how it is continuing in society. It will attack people. It makes an example of someone in order to show everyone. Show everyone what can happen – what could happen if you say something that does not match up with the current social norms and beliefs being fed.

Let’s reframe what cancel culture really is: It is a red herring.
