They Are Draining You on Purpose by Adeline Atlas

How is it that in the aftermath of one of the hardest global crises of our generation, companies managed to sell less yet still reported record profits? The answer is simple—they took advantage. They raised prices, reduced services, and maximized profits during a time when most people were just trying to stay afloat. While consumers faced challenges, companies saw an opportunity to enrich themselves further.

Less Service, No Discount

The concept of customer service as we once knew it has all but disappeared. Gone are the days of human connection and personalized care. Instead, we’re left with endless wait times, robotic responses, and inflated bills for diminished services.

Take your phone or internet provider as an example. You might spend hours on hold listening to monotone elevator music, only to be met with an automated system that offers no real resolution. Yet, while service quality plummets, your monthly bill continues to climb.

This trend isn’t exclusive to telecommunications—it’s everywhere. Airlines charge extra for luggage and seating preferences while cutting back on meals and amenities. Gas stations no longer offer the convenience of full-service, yet you pay more at the pump. We, the consumers, are doing more work and getting less in return.

Volumetric Deflation: Paying More for Less

Beyond services, products themselves are shrinking. This phenomenon, known as volumetric deflation, is when companies reduce the quantity of a product while keeping the price the same—or even raising it.

For example:

  • M&M's: Imagine buying a bag only to find there’s 1/8 less candy inside, yet the price has increased.
  • Food packaging: Many grocery items have subtly reduced their sizes while maintaining or raising their price points.

Volumetric deflation is a calculated move. Companies maximize profits while hoping consumers don’t notice the subtle changes. But over time, these small reductions add up—costing you more for less value.

Cui Bono: Who Benefits?

The Latin phrase cui bono—"who benefits?"—forces us to ask: who gains from these changes? The answer is clear. As businesses cut corners, reduce service, and offer less for more, their profit margins soar. Meanwhile, consumers are left frustrated, undervalued, and overcharged.

This is particularly evident in industries like airlines, where once-luxurious travel experiences have been replaced by cramped seats, extra fees, and bare-minimum services. What used to be a glamorous journey is now akin to being herded onto a school bus.

The Bigger Picture: The Decline of Customer Experience

In the past, businesses had to work to win your loyalty. They knew customers had choices, and they went above and beyond to provide exceptional service. Today, with monopolies, automation, and data-driven strategies, companies no longer prioritize the customer experience.

  • Gas stations: Once a full-service experience where attendants pumped your gas and cleaned your windshield, now you’re paying more to do it yourself.
  • Airlines: Once a luxurious experience with open seating, meals, and personalized service, now you’re cramped, overcharged, and treated like cargo.

The shift is clear: businesses prioritize profits over people.

Take Back Control

To counteract this trend, consumers need to reclaim their power. Here’s how:

  1. Be vigilant: Look out for volumetric deflation. Compare prices and quantities before purchasing.
  2. Vote with your wallet: Support businesses that prioritize customer care and transparency.
  3. Demand better: Speak up when you experience poor service. Companies need to know that customers won’t settle for less.
  4. Simplify: Reduce unnecessary subscriptions and expenses. Don’t let companies drain you for things you don’t need.
