Comparison And Application To Life

Drawing a parallel between these two concepts, Cannon's "backdrop people" are analogous to NPCs. Just as NPCs are not the main focus in a video game but still play a role in enhancing the player's experience, backdrop people might not have intricate personal Spiritual journeys but still contribute to the overall narrative of our shared reality.

The idea here is that not everyone we encounter in life will have profound, Soulful interactions with us, but they still add to the richness and depth of our life's experience.

Furthermore, the notion can be extended to explore deeper Spiritual ideas, like Soul loss or Soul fragmentation. In various Spiritual traditions, Soul loss is believed to occur when a part of the Soul separates from the individual due to trauma or intense emotional experiences. These individuals might seem "checked out" or not fully present, akin to how an NPC operates within the confines of its programming and lacks the depth or free will of the player character.

I don't need to tell you who the Soul'ed individuals are and who the backdrop people are – now that you know they exist, you will likely recognize them when you encounter them. It's often pretty obvious when there is no Soul at home in a human.

Clues of backdrop people: Think of all the sayings you've heard over the years: 'he's heartless,' 'she's so cold.' These sayings don't come from nowhere and provide easy clues to who may be a backdrop person. Likewise, you know who is filled with a Soul, bright and alive, likely obsessively working towards their Soul's purpose or has an intense passion for what they do or a hobby they love with no regard for what anyone else thinks of what they are doing. While it's conceivable that many individuals might be navigating life in a more 'checked out' or detached manner due to various reasons, not everyone checked out is an empty vessel or has become a backdrop person. Those on prescription medications, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety remedies, can often mimic an empty vessel with glazed-over eyes or lack of emotions, so you do not want to assume they are unless you know.10

Being able to tell is called discernment, which is the skill of differentiating between who is a Soul'ed individual and who is not.
