“In War, Truth Is the First Casualty.” – Aeschylus by Adeline Atlas
May 17, 2025
I’m Adeline Atlas, and today we’re tackling a topic that’s more relevant than ever: Knowledge is Power. In a world where information is everything, the truth is becoming harder to find, and the implications of that are staggering. From the digital landscapes we inhabit to the inequalities created by information asymmetry, we’re already in the midst of a war—a war on truth. Let’s dive into how this impacts our lives and why understanding this shift is critical for navigating the future.
This ancient quote resonates more than ever in today’s world. We are living in an age where truth is under siege, and the battlefield isn’t on physical soil—it’s in the digital realm.
Think about this: Information is the currency of the future. And just as money can be hoarded, controlled, and weaponized, so can information.
Let me ask you something: Have you ever stopped to consider what the “www” in a web address stands for? It’s World Wide Web. But whose world? Whose web?
The War on Truth in the Digital Age
We often imagine war in terms of physical conflict—armies, tanks, and battlefields. But what if the new war isn’t fought with weapons? What if it’s fought with algorithms, data, and information?
Here’s a radical thought: We are already at war.
This war doesn’t look like the wars of the past. It’s not about land or resources—it’s about control over the digital world. And the casualties of this war? Truth, freedom, and autonomy.
Why Information Is the New Battleground
Our lives are increasingly moving online. Think about it:
Social interactions? Online.
Banking? Online.
Education? Online.
Work? Online.
The digital world is becoming more “real” than the physical one. And here’s the alarming part: We don’t own ourselves online. Someone else does.
When you create a social media profile, who owns that data? When you make a purchase online, who owns your transaction history? The answer isn’t you. It’s the corporations and platforms that control these spaces.
If the online world becomes the primary reality, and we don’t own ourselves within it, what does that make us? Slaves to a system we didn’t build but are utterly dependent on.
Modern Warfare: A Silent Siege
It’s naive to think that war hasn’t evolved. Every other facet of life has changed with technology—why wouldn’t war?
Digital Devices as Weapons
Consider this: Your phone is your biggest dependency. How do you feel when you lose it? Frantic, right? That’s because these devices already own us. They hold our schedules, contacts, memories, and even our sense of connection to the world.
We assume World War 3 would involve physical conflict. But look around—are we not already under siege by the very tools we rely on?
The Checkmate Moment: AI and ControlLet’s address the elephant in the room: Artificial Intelligence. AI is at the top of the hierarchy now, and its influence is only growing.
The thing is, this war started long before AI became mainstream. But AI will deliver the final blow. It’s not a question of if—it’s a question of when.
The chessboard is set, and most people don’t even realize the game is being played. AI, with its ability to manipulate information and control narratives, is poised to call checkmate.
Information Asymmetry: An Unequal Playing Field
Here’s where it gets worse: Not all of us are equally disadvantaged. Some countries and individuals have access to more information than others. This creates what we call information asymmetry.
What Is Information Asymmetry?
It’s a situation where one party has access to more or better information than another.
Let me give you an example:
Did you know that if you live in Canada, you can’t access Canadian news on social media platforms? Let that sink in. Canadians can’t even see news about their own country online.
The Global Implications
Information asymmetry creates massive inequalities:
Unequal Intelligence: Countries or individuals with access to more information have a strategic advantage.
Censorship: When governments or corporations control what people can see, they shape not just opinions but reality itself.
Limited Opportunities: Those without access to critical information are left behind, unable to make informed decisions or compete on the global stage.
This is not just unfair—it’s dangerous.
The Consequences of Information Control
When information is controlled, so is thought. And when thought is controlled, freedom is lost.
Censorship Stifles Growth
Think about what happens when you’re only shown a narrow slice of reality. You’re unable to see the full picture, which limits your ability to think critically or challenge the status quo.
The Divide Between the “Informed” and the “Uninformed”
This disparity in information access creates a divide between those who are empowered by knowledge and those who are left in the dark. If knowledge is power, then this divide is one of power itself.
What Can We Do?
So, how do we navigate this war on truth? How do we reclaim our autonomy in a world where information is both weaponized and withheld?
1. Question Everything
Don’t accept information at face value. Ask:
Who is providing this information?
What is their agenda?
What aren’t they telling me?
2. Seek Diverse Sources
Don’t rely on a single platform or perspective. Expand your horizons by exploring alternative viewpoints, even those you may initially disagree with.
3. Protect Your Data
Be mindful of what you share online. Understand that your data is a valuable asset, and treat it as such.
4. Advocate for Transparency
Push for policies and technologies that prioritize transparency and accountability in the digital world.
5. Stay Informed
Awareness is the first step. The more you know about how information is controlled and manipulated, the better equipped you’ll be to navigate this landscape.
Final Thoughts: Knowledge Is Power
The saying “knowledge is power” has never been more relevant. But in today’s world, knowledge isn’t just about what you know—it’s about who controls what you know.
We are living in a time where truth is under attack, and the battleground is the digital space we occupy every day. The question is, will you be a passive participant in this war, or will you take an active role in reclaiming your autonomy?
