Welcome back to Soul Renovation! I'm Adeline Atlas, the author of the School of Soul series, an eight-time published author, master manifestor, and your cheerleader bestie on the internet. Today, we're diving into a truth that can change how you live your life: when you realize how quickly people forget the dead, you'll stop living to impress them. Let’s get into it.

The Fleeting Nature of Life

Life moves fast. One day you’re here, making plans, chasing dreams, trying to meet expectations—and then it’s over. And the sobering reality? People move on. No matter how admired, successful, or influential someone is, the world doesn’t stop turning when they leave it.

This isn’t meant to be morbid but to wake you up to the truth. If people forget even those who made history, why spend your time bending over backward to impress people who won’t remember half the things you did? Instead of chasing validation, imagine what could happen if you focused on living—on creating a life that makes you proud, regardless of who’s watching.

The Illusion of Approval

From childhood, we’re conditioned to seek approval—first from parents, then from teachers, peers, society, social media. It’s a never-ending cycle of proving our worth through achievements, status, and external recognition. But here’s the hard truth: most people aren’t paying as much attention to you as you think.

People are too absorbed in their own lives to constantly evaluate yours. That promotion, that car, that carefully curated Instagram post—most people glance at it and move on. And yet, how often do we let their fleeting opinions shape our entire existence?

Breaking Free from the Need to Impress

Living to impress others is like running on a treadmill—you exhaust yourself, but you never actually move forward. The moment you realize that external validation is temporary and superficial, you free yourself from the need to chase it.

Start by asking yourself:

  • Whose opinion actually matters? Filter out the noise. Who do you truly value, and who are you trying to impress out of habit?
  • Are your choices aligned with your desires? Are you doing something because you want it, or because it looks good to others?
  • What would you do if no one was watching? If there was no applause, no judgment—what life would you build?

Living Authentically

Living authentically means making decisions based on what fulfills you, not what makes you look successful in someone else’s eyes. It means choosing what aligns with your values rather than what guarantees applause.

When you live authentically:

  • You stop chasing approval and start chasing purpose.
  • You make decisions that bring you peace instead of stress.
  • You attract people who resonate with who you are, not just what you accomplish.

Authenticity is magnetic. When you stop performing for the world and start showing up as your true self, you build connections, opportunities, and experiences that actually matter.

Exercise: Letting Go of the Performance

  • Audit Your Motivations: Look at your major life choices—career, relationships, personal goals. Are they for you, or were they influenced by a need to impress?
  • Write Down Your Core Values: Strip away outside opinions. What do you truly believe in?
  • Set an Authenticity Challenge: For the next week, make at least one decision purely based on what you want, without considering external validation.

The Legacy That Actually Matters

When it’s all said and done, your legacy won’t be in the things that impressed people for five minutes. It will be in the impact you made, the love you shared, and the joy you experienced.

People won’t remember the designer clothes, the titles, the approval you chased. They will remember the way you made them feel, the energy you brought into a room, and the authenticity you lived with.

So stop living for applause that fades. Live for the moments, the meaning, and the mark you leave—not on social media, but in the hearts of those who truly matter.
