Time Value Exercise 2: The Value of Your Remaining Days
INSTRUCTIONS: It’s time to take inventory of how many minutes you have left in your Game before your timer runs out. This helps you properly evaluate the weight of each of your moments.
- Pick a day that means something to you. For example, if you love your Saturdays, go with that day. Basically, use any day of the week you attach some meaning to.
- Calculate how many of these days you have left in your life. You can be generous and optimistic like I am and calculate up to age one hundred based on fifty-two weeks in a year. Say there will be fifty-two of that day for every remaining year in your life: 52 x (100—current age). This puts immense pressure on you once you realize the absolute worth of your days and how many of them you have left in your life. For example, if I live to one hundred, I have approximately 3380 Saturdays left.
- As soon as you do this calculation, as in the last exercise, you will likely feel a pressure arise. That’s the point. You must connect to that feeling whenever you are taking steps toward anything that matters to you. Remember that feeling.
What was your number? You now officially have that many Saturdays left in your life, give or take.
Mine is ONLY 3380. ONLY 3380 Saturdays left… (give or take). It hits differently, doesn't it?
Gosh, this is a bit harsh. No, it's not. These are the truths of life. The things no one ever talks about. Is it bad taste to try to estimate how many years you have left? Or is it intelligent to take inventory of your resources in life in order to use them in the most supportive and satisfying way?
You cannot overstand the value of your time if you do not look at the cold, hard facts. Your life is important, and you owe it to yourself to show up and give life your best shot. You are filled with incredible talents and possess miraculous abilities. You simply have to apply yourself! It is mind-blowing what you are capable of with the right vision and strategy. The bigger life you want is possible.
Now that you have a reference point—a resource count for your time—don't be surprised if you suddenly find yourself thinking about those numbers throughout the day as you speak with people, set appointments, or do routine tasks. Once you know something, you can never unknow it. Your mind now KNOWS how much time it has left—and you’d better bet that is going to cause a shift.
Change happens quickly on micro levels. Each shift, each reframe brings you closer to becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be.
