Three Stages of Habit Installation
Have you heard of ritual plasticity? It's a concept similar to neuroplasticity, but it specifically applies to habits and routines. Introduced by Robin Sharma, it describes the three stages that every new habit undergoes:
Destruction (Days 1-22): This initial phase is about breaking down the old habit patterns. It involves discomfort and resistance as your brain begins to dismantle the neural pathways associated with the previous habit. This stage can feel like a struggle because your brain is literally rewiring itself.
Installation (Days 23-44): In this phase, you’re building new neural pathways and emotional connections to support the new habit. It often feels confusing or chaotic, like being in the middle of a renovation, because your brain is still getting used to the change. This is the "messy middle," where it’s easy to lose motivation, but it’s also where significant growth happens.
Integration and Automaticity (Days 45-66+): Finally, after around sixty-six days, the new habit starts becoming more automatic. You’re no longer using as much willpower to maintain it because it has begun to settle into your routine. Your brain has now formed strong neural connections for this new behavior, and your energy is freed up for other challenges.
Remember these three stages: Destruction (letting go of old habits), Installation (building new habits), and Integration (staying consistent).
