Why You Must Set Your Rules

Knowing and doing are two different things. You know this. It’s why you probably couldn’t change one of your habits. Think back to the last time you tried to change a habit in your life. Did you rely on motivation? Did your tactics work? Do you have the same goals popping up as your New Year's resolution list every year?

Rules are your buffers. Rules must be aligned with what you want, not what you don't want. When your rules are aligned, they become more than a motivator. They help you stay on a straight-line path, aligned with what you want for yourself.

Re-read my rules. Do you see the words no, don’t, or stop anywhere? Rules of the Game, and your rules, are designed to help you WANT to stay on your straight-line path toward your goals. They are designed to bring out inspired action. Motivation alone is not enough for you to change your habits and behavior. You will not change or achieve your goals if your only long-term strategy is motivation. Motivation is not self-fueling. It keeps you chasing. It keeps you burning energy to “get” something. Motivation does not generate energy and can die.

When you design effective rules, they keep you aligned with your goals. You then work toward achieving your goals instead of chasing them. While goals come up frequently in this volume, your Game is not governed by chasing goals. It is about aligning yourself with them.
