What Are Vanity Metrics?

The vanity metrics of likes are simply creating a commentary feedback loop, which you do not need to take into consideration when you are creating and sharing.

vanity (noun)

Inflated pride in oneself or one's appearance.

Something that is vain, empty, or valueless.

With the introduction of the "like" button, Social Media platforms added another layer to the sharing culture. This seemingly innocuous feature encouraged users to seek validation from others by accumulating likes on their posts. As a result, people began sharing more personal and attention-grabbing content to gain approval and recognition from their online peers. The gradual shift towards oversharing was driven by harnessing humans’ natural instincts to want to be liked. The like button promotes more sharing because more sharing equals more likes. 

What you might not be aware of, is this also feeds conformity to current narratives. The like is a vote by another for what they want to see more of.
