THE CONTRADICTORY MESSAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA

EFFECTS ON COGNITIVE DISORDERS

I mentioned fragmentation earlier in this volume, it’s time to revisit it. Where does fragmentation start? It begins with not knowing who one is and then allowing yourself to be portioned out.

A person who is sure of who they are is complete. They are solid in who they are, thus you cannot split them. They will not conform. The phone and Social Media have become such an integral part of our lives that it is difficult to imagine our lives without them. However, they have also brought about a cognitive dissonance between us and the real world. 

One of the reasons for this is the contradictory message we receive from the system. On the one hand, we are told to be ourselves and self-identify, yet on the other hand, we are expected to conform to current narratives. This contradiction not only stifles our self-expression but also erodes the completeness of the self. A result of juggling this contradiction of values and expectations further fragments the self.

To make things worse, the system censors, or even cancels, those who do not conform, which can lead to feelings of frustration and isolation, and erosion of diverse perspectives. The challenge, then, is to recognize and resist the pull of these superficial messages in order to preserve our sense of identity of our most authentic self.
