MOVIES OR WARNINGS?

THE LITTLE MERMAID

The Little Mermaid is a classic example of a destiny swap. Ariel is deceived into surrendering her birthright—her voice, her power, and ultimately her path—to Ursula, the sea witch. It’s a cautionary tale about manipulation, consent gained through deception, and how people can be persuaded to give away what makes them powerful.

Recognizing the Destiny Swap

In a destiny swap, someone manipulates another person into giving up their gifts, influence, or rightful position, often under the guise of helping them. Ursula offers Ariel what seems like a shortcut to her dreams but is really a trap.

  • Ariel is favored and gifted, but she doesn’t fully see it. Her voice is her inheritance—a unique, unmatched gift as the daughter of the Sea King.
  • Ursula recognizes Ariel’s value and wants it for herself. Instead of building her own power, she positions herself as a “mentor,” all while plotting to take Ariel’s place.
  • Ariel agrees to the exchange, but under false pretenses. Ursula frames it as an opportunity, not a theft.

This is how manipulation works in real life. People who envy your favor rarely take it outright; they convince you to give it away.

Where Consent Was Given Through Trickery

Ursula never forced Ariel; she convinced her to agree.

Step 1: Creating the Illusion of Lack
Ursula plays on Ariel’s insecurities, making her believe she must change herself to get what she wants. She downplays Ariel’s natural gifts and makes her think her voice isn’t valuable. In life, people do this by making you insecure so you’ll trade your power for something they claim is “better.”

Step 2: Presenting the Deal as a Favor
Ursula offers legs in exchange for Ariel’s voice, framing it as harmless. This mirrors real-world manipulation, where someone positions themselves as a helper while quietly removing what makes you powerful.

Step 3: Binding the Agreement
The magical contract represents how people lock others into binding exchanges—literal or symbolic—without them realizing the full cost. Like Esau trading his birthright for a meal, Ariel gives away something priceless for instant gratification.

The Aftermath

Ursula doesn’t stop at taking Ariel’s voice; she uses it to replace her, charm the prince, and nearly claim Ariel’s place permanently. In life, people who envy you may remove you, then step into your role to reap your rewards.

Reversing the Swap

Ariel reclaims her power only when she realizes her voice was her true strength and takes action to get it back. Destiny swaps can be reversed, but they require recognizing the loss and fighting for restoration.

The Lesson
  • Know your worth before someone convinces you otherwise.
  • Question why someone wants you to trade something—if it’s truly worthless, why do they want it?
  • Beware of “mentors” with hidden motives.
  • Never give away your voice, power, or birthright because someone made you feel lacking.
