Definition:
Being the “bigger person” isn’t about being quiet. It’s about being clear. Your strength isn’t proven by how much disrespect you can absorb — it’s measured by how radically you protect your energy, your dignity, and your truth.*

“Be the bigger person” is bullsh*t advice. And I know we’ve all heard it, especially those of us who were raised to keep the peace, turn the other cheek, or take the high road — even when that road was paved with manipulation, gaslighting, and repeated violation. But here’s the truth: your “bigness” is not defined by your ability to silently absorb harm. Your light isn’t proven by how much disrespect you can endure without pushing back. And your character isn’t more holy because you swallowed your truth to keep someone else comfortable.

That’s not grace. That’s conditioning.

We were taught that staying silent in the face of abuse makes us noble. That not defending ourselves somehow means we’ve evolved. But how is it evolution if it keeps you erased? How is it maturity if it requires you to mute yourself? And how is it spiritual if it means you’re complicit in your own degradation?

Let me say this clearly: choosing peace doesn’t mean choosing passivity. Sometimes peace looks like walking away. Sometimes it sounds like, “You don’t get to talk to me like that.” Sometimes it’s removing yourself from access entirely. And sometimes it’s holding the mirror up so someone else finally sees their behavior — even if it shakes the whole table.

You are not here to spiritually bypass your boundaries.

You are not here to be so “bigger” that you allow people to mistreat you just so you can look like the evolved one. That’s not maturity. That’s martyrdom. And being the bigger person does not mean being the emptier person — the one drained, disrespected, and diminished, but smiling through it to keep the optics clean.

We have to stop calling self-erasure “grace.”
We have to stop confusing suppression with strength.
Real strength is the ability to speak up, walk away, and stand firm — even when it’s uncomfortable.
Real bigness is knowing when someone is trying to play you and having the self-respect to not show up for the performance.

You are not weak for defending your peace. You are not aggressive for setting boundaries. You are not “less spiritual” because you refuse to be disrespected on loop. Your energy was not designed to be a punching bag for unhealed people who refuse to take accountability.

And I’ll say this — sometimes the most evolved thing you can do is respond clearly. Not to retaliate. Not to punish. But to declare the standard. To make it known: “I don’t operate at that level. I don’t participate in those games. And I will not stay in environments that require me to shrink just to be considered kind.”

You can forgive — and still remove access.
You can send love — and still shut the door.
You can be a light — and still cast a boundary so sharp it cuts off every form of disrespect before it can even breathe in your direction.

So the next time someone tells you to “be the bigger person,” ask yourself: what are they really asking you to do? Absorb more abuse? Silence your voice? Compromise your standard? Because if being “bigger” means becoming smaller in your own life — it’s not wisdom. It’s weakness disguised as virtue.
